PREVIOUS AGM MINUTES & MATTERS ARISING
There were no matters arising from last
year’s minutes. It was proposed by Peter Wright and seconded by Toni Gates that the minutes be accepted as a true record
of the previous meeting.
CHAIRMANS REPORT
Alan B:-
Considered that it had been another
good year with no major problems arising.
Has had complaints about bad language
on the piste and requested that clubs try to improve on this next year.
Glad that competitions were well
supported and played in good spirit
Pleased that league is growing steadily
and happy to welcome two new teams, The Plough 2 and Engine Locos. The Cuckoos have split into two teams, Phoenix
and one other (no name as yet) and Alan thanked all the members for resolving the situation so that more teams and players
will now be playing in the league rather than less.
All these new teams will play in
Division 3 next year. Committee will decide how the leagues will be organised before the captains meeting.
Thanked committee for support and
particularly Alan N for smooth running of leagues and competitions.
Congratulated all winners and commiserated
with those who have been relegated.
Thanked Bill Addison for sponsoring
the Challenge Trophy for yet another year.
TREASURERS REPORT (see attached)
Denise presented both sets of accounts.
Colin Poyser has audited the accounts and Denise wished to thank
him for carrying out this task.
Proposed by Dave
Pickard and seconded by Danny Sims that accounts be accepted as correct.
Denise then suggested
that as the bank balance has been gradually decreasing the summer league fees need to be increased to £15/team next year;
she pointed out that when she first took over the treasurer’s post 10 years
ago the fees were £15 and that we reduced them to £10 where they have remained ever since. All other fees will remain the
same.
The proposal was
seconded by Eric Wilson and voted for unanimously.
FIXTURE SECRETARY’S REPORT
Alan N was pleased with the way the season
had gone, announced winners of all summer and winter leagues and competitions (see attached list)
Number of postponed games has decreased,
would like to see it decrease even further next year.
Thanked Rory O’Brien for keeping
website updated.
New divisional organiser is needed, any
volunteers to speak to AN after meeting.
Dates of both cup finals will be set at the Captains meeting.

PENNANT DOUBLES
4th July, Irish Club Letchworth. Weather, fine and warm. 14 teams contested the Doubles. The morning 'snake'
competition saw three teams undefeated on 4 wins. Top team on points difference and therefore No.1 seeds were
Em & M(Emma & Myra) 2nd seeds were The Shooters Club (Rob Fox & Flapper), with Double Depresso (Paolo &
Pete Taylor) 3rd. The first round of the knockout however saw the top two seeds crash out. Em &
M losing 12-13 to The Rebels (Ian Perton and Steph Moulden) The Shooters Club were well beaten by Herbie & Greavsie
(Martin Hughes & Kieth Spratley) reversing their morning result. The first semi saw The Rebels beat Luton (Ian
B & Mike Turvey) and Double Depresso beating Herbie & Greavsie. In the final, some good shooting and pointing
from both teams however Double Depresso proved just too strong and ran out worthy wiinners, undefeated all day, leaving
The Rebels as very creditable Runners Up. The Plate final was contested by The Fags (Geoffrey
Gray & Fred Jones) and Bancroft Romans (Dave Pickard & Nick Bull). The Romans who had accounted for
yours truly (and Amy) in the semi, could not reproduce their semi final form and The Fags will be the ones
collecting the plate trophy at the Dinner Dance. My thanks to Paolo and the Cuckoos for hosting the event
and to every one of the players who made it a really enjoyable day. Alan Newland

Pennant Triples Sunday 7th June We woke up to torrential rain.
On arrival at Ickleford prospects of play looked bleak. The main pitch was under water and others were heavily puddled. It
was decided to wait until 10.00, abandonment seemed almost inevitable. However just before 10.00, the skies lightened to the
south and the rain eased. Peter Wright and helpers started to drain the water and we were back on. All 16 entered teams
turned up, showing real commitment to the sport and play got under way only half hour late, all be it on soggy terrains.
A 4 round 'snake' decided the qualification for the Main with the top eight teams going through. The remaining 8 qualifying
for the Plate. The sun came out and all was set fair for a good afternoon. Two teams had 4
wins in the morning, Oh So Lucky(Alan N, Adrian, Myra) and The Committee (Denise, Alan B, Chrissie). Oh So Lucky met
last years winners Luton (Mike, Kier, Ian) in the first round of the knockout. Oh So lucky coming out on top. The Committee
came up against Chiltern Juniors playing as a 4 man squad(Max, Sam B, Reece,Ross)The Juniors who had shown improving form
throughout the day winning a very close match. The Juniors continued their form in their semi final accounting for Rising
Sun (Keith, Fred, Andy). Oh So Lucky knocked out White Hart (Nev, Jo, Rob F)in the other semi. I think it
is fair to say that Oh So Lucky were fairly confidant of winning the trophy especially after starting well and leading 6-0.
The juniors however would not be shaken off, pegging away with some good shooting and pointing. With Oh So Lucky leading
10-7, a loose first point enabled the Juniors to point near the coche, two missed shots followed by 3 closing down points.
Still the Juniors were holding, but with 3 close boule in the head, Oh So Lucky were not too concerned. Big mistake, five
stunning points later and it was all over. Loud cheers from the one sided crowd,(funny that?) A really well
deserved win. In the Plate final, Dutch Courage(Peter W, Geoffrey, Gordon Ansell) triumphed over Ouse
(John, Mo, Steve C). In the end a cracking day of petanque was enjoyed by all. My thanks to everyone for their help and support.
See you all soon. Alan Newland
( On a personal note, it is always very hard playing against the juniors. I would like to thank Oh
so lucky for not giving them an inch or patronising them ( as with the best of intentions teams often do) but treating
them like any other opposition. Juniors always get the crowd support but i did feel that some spectators forgot that
your team was competing in a serious competition final and they certainly would not have liked being heckled that way even
if it was good natured. I think your team was fantastic in the way it handled everything and the juniors could and should
learn a lot from you.
Toni )
First round Pennant Cup draw now reads: Bird in Hand 'B' v. Queens
Head Cottered v. Engine 'B' Plough v. Rose & Crown Musgave Diggers v. Bird
in Hand 'A' Bancroft Park - Bye (Engine Crusaders withdrawn) Luton 'A' v. Lidlington White
Hart 'B' v. Bucks 'Z' Botany Bay v. Ouse Matches to be played W/C 8th June

Winter League Finals Day
The sun shone on the 22 teams that turned out at Ickleford for the Pennant Winter League finals day. The 'main'
competition was contested by 12 teams who qualified earlier from the 6 leagues. The in form Ouse team (Mo Sanders, John
Luke, Steve Carter and Tom Thompson) were the only undefeated team in the morning winning all 4 games. They continued
their winning ways in the semi by defeating Great Brickhill (Charley Cunningham, grandad Terry Maize and Simon Brunt) In
the other semi M.B.J.(new dad Jeremy Huntley, Miles Gooda, Ben Gallimore and Gareth Sullivan) renewed their rivalry of
earlier with Cuckoos(Paolo Infantino, Sue Infantino and Pete Taylor) in a good match, despite some good shooting from Paolo, the
young guns of M.B.J. proved too strong. So to the final, unbeaten Ouse v. impressive M.B.J.. It proved
one game too far for the Ouse who could not match the shooting of the younger team who won 13-6. In the 'plate'
10 teams competed. The final was between Luton Con Club (Gavin McLarron, Les Gardiner and super sub Denise Newland,
in the absence of an indisposed Dave Washbourn) and R.A.F.(Tony 'Flapper' Richards, Sharon Fane and Andy Goodship).
R.A.F. made things difficult but never really got going, Luton Cons running out comfortable winners. My thanks
to Peter Wright and the rest of the Ickleford club for hosting a cracking occasion, if the summer season is as good
as this, we really have something to look forward too. Alan Newland ( Fixture Secretary)
Hi Everyone. Despite the inclement weather the leagues have been completed. I have attached
the full results in 'Excel' format. The following teams have qualified for the 'Main'. M.B.J.,
Cuckoos, Engine 'B', Queens Head, Ickleford Bob Cats, Lidlington 'B', Botany Bay 'A', Engine Crusaders,
Great Brickhill, Bell, Ouse, Engine Exchequers. The follwing have qualified for the 'Plate'.
Luton, Luton Con.Club, Kings Arms, R.A.M., Bancroft Senators, R.A.F**., Welwyn, Bancroft Gladiators, Ickleford Panthyers,
Lidlington'A', Cottered*, Botany Bay, Ickleford Lions. (S.M.A. withdrawn). *Cottered are 1st Reserves, **R.A.F. 2nd
Reserves for Main. Finals Day is at Ickleford again this year. Please be there for a 10.00 start. Mr Tasty's
burger van will be in attendance, serving his usual excellent fare. The format for the finals day, both comps, will be
3 or 4 round snake dependant on the weather, followed by semi final and finals knockout. Would captains
please let me know if your team will not be attending. The finished leagues are below, looking
forward to seeing you all at Ickleford. Regards Alan Newland

Pennant Triples
The summer finally arrived, just in time for the Pennant Triples at the Irish Cub, Letchworth. 15 teams turned out despite
a clash with the Holland trip and the Last '16'. The morning qualifying competition was played as a 4 round snake.
Triple Espresso(Paulo, Sue & Pete T.) were top seeds with 4 wins, 7 other teams managed 3 wins apiece, so we had our eight
for the 'Main'. Some close games, and usual hard luck stories, not least Cottered, who 'popped' the cosh when looking like
winning their semi-final against Luton. The Final itself was between Luton(Mike Turvey, Ian Brittain & Alan Roden)
and Me Emma & Blakey(Andy Goodship, Emma Jones & Dave Blakey),nice to see Dave back playing again. Luton managed
an early lead but were pegged back by a loose end which cost them a five. However Luton regrouped and held on. The Plate
final was between Ouse(Mo Sanders, Jack Smith & Steve Carter) and R.A.M. (Ross, Malcolm & Angie Dowsett). In an absorbing
match the Ouse prevailed, what other sport would a 78 year old play against a young teenager in a final? Great stuff. My
thanks to Paulo and his team for hosting the event and for all their hard work. Pennant Doubles coming up at Ickleford Saturday
June 28th. look out for the flyers. Alan Newland.

Pennant Winter League Finals Day
The north wind did blow.... but despite the weather, 23 teams turned out for the Winter league finals. Chief groundsman
Peter Wright performed a minor miracle to get the pistes playable. The early rain petered out but the cold wind and wet
terrain made playing conditions difficult. The qualifying snake competition was reduced to 3 rounds, the current
holders, Luton, (Mike Turvey, Alan Roden & Keir Gale) were somewhat fortunate to qualify, after losing 13-1 in their 2nd
game. In the semis, Luton played the only team on 100%, Bird B (Peter Wright, Pete Taylor & Denise Newland). Luton however
dug in and ground out the win. In the other semi, Con.Clovers (Adrian Emson, Myra & Sarah Huntley) easily defeated Engine
A ( Martin Hughes, Brian & Jill Howard). The Con Clovers must have been confident of winning the final, as
they had been the team to defeat Luton 13-1, but the holders showed their metal and ran out the winners and so retained their
crown. In the Plate, Queens Head (Steve Carter, Steve Wilson& Tony Angel) defeated Thistime ( Chris & Sam
Ohlson and Conrad Zeibland) in a close keenly contested match. All in all an enjoyable if cold day, played in a
great spirit. Alan Newland
