Three Shires Winter League Finals Day.
On a bright sunny morning , players arrived at NHIA hoping to have some of the Irish luck.
The smell of cooked bacon by Tasty burger van, attracted 22 teams, to compete in the Three Shires Winter League finals.
Twelve teams competed in the main, and ten in the plate.
John Deaville and Derek Northend as organisers, decided the state of play.
Two leagues of six team played five games with the winners of each league playing in the final of the main.
The same setup was used for the plate, but with only ten teams attending, each team played four games with
a bye,
A final was also played by the winners of each league.
The weather turned in the early afternoon. The luck of the Irish maybe had ran out.
A heavy downpour of hailstone (they hurt), sent players looking for cover under the Rory O’Brien
stand.
After a ten minute of rain and hail stoppage, play resumed with the usual competitive and friendly banter.
The sun come out again in time for the finals to be played, but in cooler temperature.
The plate final was disputed between Rising Sun (Rob, Anita & Jack) and Engine A (Derek, Gill &
Brian).
Engine A come out on top winning 13 -9
The main final was played between Queens Head 2 (John, Mo & Tom) and Plough 2 (James, John & Simon?)
Queens 2 played extremely well all day, not losing any games, and the did not falter at the final hurdle.
They resisted a valiant effort from the Plough 2, but won the contest 13-4.
A great warm up for the 2009 coming season.

JD
reported that 2008 had been a successful season with Divs 1 & 2 results a lot better than the previous year and although
there was a problem with Div 3 & 4 results, that this wasn’t down to the clubs themselves, but to the results going
astray after being sent to the DO, because of a mix up of addresses. JD thanked
Div 3 & 4 for their forbearance whilst this problem was sorted out. A brief round up of League results cups & Competitions

Three Shires Triples
After very slow entries there was a good turnout for this
competition. The day started wet and dull but spirits were good. I must say the atmosphere at this competition was really
great. Play was serious but friendly. After a 3 round snake then knockout for the main and plate Paolo, Pete and Sue played
Gavin, Wash and Steve from Luton in the plate final, Home advantage was a benefit for Paolo and his team as they came out
victorious.
The main final between Myra, Adrian and Tony V Jez, Miles,
Gareth was equally as exciting as the plate final. The score did not reflect the great boules played by both teams. The final
result was the young lads took the title.
Both finals were great to watch with fun and sportsmanship
from all four teams, it was also nice to see such a crowd stay around for the final.
Thanks to all who attended and helped with the running
of the day. (apologies for no photo of plate runners up, they were a little camera shy and run off before I could snap them)
On a personal note; to me this competition was what boule
should be all about, great play, skill, sportsmanship, fun and laughter.

Three Shires Winter League Finals Day Rport
The 2008 Shires Winter League was held at Cottered PC this year on what tuned out to be
chilly but fairly dry day, with one short spell of rain. Much better than the dire weather that was forcasted.
The main competition was made up of 3 Leagues of 4 with the top two teams from each league
going thru with the two best runners up into the Quarters, Semis and final. It was a hard fought contest with the Engine A
going on to win the final against the Rose & Crown A without losing a game all day. So congratulations to Martin Hughes
and Gill & Brian Howarth.
It was decided that as the plate had an odd number of teams ie 9 to, use a four round snake
system, with the top four teams playing off for first and second place. Although this proved to be a bit long drawn out with
some very close matches the final was eventually won by Ickleford lions against Queens Head 2.
Many thanks to Cottered PC members for all the hard work they put in to make the event
successful and for the great food that they laid on. Thanks Cottered and thanks to all the players for making it a great day.

Three Shires
Triples
A good turn out and good weather for this competition.
It was surprising that teams did not use it as practice for Brean, but regardless there was some very strong teams entered.
We had a junior team enter comprising of Amy, Reece, Sam B. They started off strong with a convincing win in their first game,
but then hit a downward slope. They battled well but did not win anymore morning games. There was a couple of teams in the
morning games that showed obvious strength. Sarah, Jeremy & Ben played with ease throughout the morning, as did Derek,
Martin and Danny.
The plate final was between Pete T, Sue, Paolo and Amy
Reece, Sam. I would personally like to thank Pete, Paolo and Sue who were kind and sporting enough to allow me to advise the
juniors through this game. The attitude of this team was 2nd to none and an example to all. The juniors once again
put in a good performance but the experience of the slightly older team won through making Sue, Pete and Paolo Plate winners.
The main final was no surprise, between Derek, Martin,
Danny and Sarah, Jeremy, Ben. Derek’s team had played convincing boule all day clocking up some great results, but could
not quite get into their stride in the final. The confidence of the youngsters game them the added edge and allowed them to
gain yet another stunning win, making them Three Shires Triples Winners.
Thank you to Ickleford for your hospitality and to John
Luke for yet another well run competition.

Plate Winners Pete, Sue, Paolo

Three Shires Doubles
It was a good day weather wise but the turn out was very poor. With four divisions in this league you would expect a good
turnout. But sadly only a handful of teams supported this event.
However it turned out to be a great day and a whole load of fun.
The Main final was under way quite early,Ben and Tom scrapped it into the main after a very scratchy but enjoyable morning.
They played against Paolo and Pete T who put in superb performances throughtout the day. It was a good game to watch and play
was of a high standard. Ben and Tom finally surged forward to take the title of Three Shires Doubles Champions with Pete and
Paolo as Runners Up.
The Plate final started much later but the was still a fair crow of supporters who stayed to watch.
So John L & Steve took on Robin and Ian B in a final that provied much entertainment. Unfortunatly John and Steve who
never gave up battling could not quite get a grip on the game. Robin and Ian played a great game and were deserving winners.
Thank you to all who entered and to the organisers and host club.
